Are you aware of any organizations in your state involved in the redistricting process?

Why does this matter? Many organizations in different states are coordinating redistricting efforts. If you are able to connect with them, it may make organizing with community members and their goals more manageable.

If you know of any organizations in your state that are not included, please submit them using this survey form, that way we can provide this information to folks in your state who are looking to get engaged as well!

Will you be providing COI testimony?

Why does this matter? Communities of Interest testimony is a valuable way to make your voice heard in front of the state legislature or commission. By describing where your community is, what interests tie you together, this insight can be used to keep your Community of Interest together.

If this is your first time speaking in front of the state legislature or commission, we recognize how daunting it can be. We have created a Helpful Hints for Giving Effective Testimony document providing tips on how to make sure your voice is heard, based on the experiences of individuals who have been involved in previous redistricting processes.

Common Cause has created a COI Testimony template that can act as a guide when writing your own.

Are you interested in drawing COI or district maps?

Why does this matter? COI maps provide another way to visualize your community. On the other hand, drawing legal district maps can be a powerful tool to show that certain communities can be kept intact and fairly represented.

A component of providing COI testimony can be to draw a COI map. The RDH has surveyed the major mapping tools available and compiled information regarding their features in our Choosing Your Own Mapping Tool resource.

Do you want to evaluate proposed maps?

Why does this matter? Something to consider is whether a district plan will continue to represent a community over the next decade. Additionally, this provides a chance to determine whether a map is a gerrymander — partisan, racial, incumbent protection or otherwise.

Choosing Your Own Mapping Tool can help you determine which mapping features are available in which tools, and help you analyze proposed maps.

PlanScore is a nonpartisan resource that can assist with scoring new district plans.

Are you interested in advocating for nonpartisan redistricting?

Why does this matter? Redistricting has historically occurred behind closed doors, which has made it difficult for individuals to participate. There are many new tools and resources available, which make it possible to more effectively advocate for fair maps, reforms, and representation.

The League of Women Voters has put together a Redistricting Action Kit that can help you identify what actions you can take to advocate for fair maps, whether it is by calling your elected officials, spreading awareness, or attending local meetings.
