Organization Resources
Have you coordinated with other organizations in your state that are also involved in the redistricting process?
Why does this matter? Many organizations in different states are coordinating redistricting efforts and forming coalitions. If you are able to connect with them, it may make organizing and representing communities more effective.
If you know of any organizations in your state that are not included, please submit them using this survey form, that way we can provide this information to folks in your state who are looking to get engaged as well!
Is your organization drawing COI or district maps?
Why does this matter? Community of Interest maps provide another way to visualize local communities. On the other hand, drawing legal district maps can be a powerful tool to show that certain communities can be kept intact and fairly represented. Choosing a tool that is compatible with what is used by other organizations and finding a way to collect maps from community members can make this effort go more smoothly.
If you are interested in drawing maps the RDH has surveyed the major mapping tools and compiled information regarding their features in our Choosing Your Own Mapping Tool resource.
Is your organization involved in redistricting advocacy?
Why does this matter? Redistricting has historically occurred behind closed doors, which has made it difficult for certain communities to participate. There are many new tools and resources available, which make it possible to more effectively advocate for fair maps, reforms, and representation. Mobilizing local communities can help these efforts gain traction and push forward more effectively.
Through a collaborative effort by several organizations, the Message Manual was created to assist supporters of redistricting reform by highlighting effective methods of communication to mobilize community members to take action.
Common Cause has published Redistricting Reform, Mapping Our Future, an activist handbook that highlights steps and coalition guidelines for winning redistricting reforms. They have also partnered with other organizations to form the Redistricting Community College and train the trainer materials.
