Ohio 2024 General Election Precinct Boundaries and Election Results ## RDH Date Retrieval 05/01/25 ## Sources 2024 general election precinct-level results from the Redistricting Data Hub election results file (https://redistrictingdatahub.org/dataset/ohio-2024-general-election-precinct-level-results/) via the Ohio Secretary of State originally (https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/election-results-and-data/2024-official-election-results/) Precinct shapefile data for 29 of Ohio's 88 counties came directly from the Ohio 2022 General Election Precinct-Level Results and Precinct Boundaries file (https://redistrictingdatahub.org/dataset/ohio-2022-general-election-precinct-level-results-and-precinct-boundaries/). In the remaining counties, precinct data was gathered from a combination of the Ohio 2022 file, county websites or publicly available maps and shapefiles, direct contact with county officials, and the Ohio polling location search (https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/toolkit/polling-location/). All counties (including those only using the Ohio 2022 file as a source) were compared against any publicly available maps or precinct shapefiles, as well as an Ohio voter file from L2 dated October 31st, 2024. Special thanks to Geoff Wise, Osvaldo Gomez, and Jordan Hyatt for their assistance in precinct collection. See below for more details. ## Notes on Field Names: Columns reporting votes generally follow the pattern: One example is: G16PREDCLI The first character is G for a general election, P for a primary, S for a special, and R for a runoff. After joining the election results to a precinct geometry, the precincts were then compared against the October 31, 2024 voter file, as well as any publicly available maps or shapefiles for the county. For 29 counties the 2022 precinct shapes were ultimately used (Adams, Allen, Brown, Carroll, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Coshocton, Crawford, Defiance, Fayette, Fulton, Guernsey, Hardin, Harrison, Hocking, Holmes, Jackson, Morgan, Morrow, Muskingum, Paulding, Pike, Portage, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Vinton, Williams, Wyandot). The remaining counties all contain changes to the 2022 shapes based on new maps, shapefiles, or information derived from the state's polling locator tool. After receiving updated maps or shapefiles from counties, we checked these maps against the L2 voter file and the state's polling locator tool to ensure that no mistakes were made. As can be seen below, in certain instances, shapefiles or maps we received did not match how ballots were actually delivered on Election Day, which was apparent from the L2 voter file and verified by the polling locator tool. Although the polling locator is updated continuously, our voter file is not and changes were only made when the polling locator matched the October 31 voter file. Typically, precincts were intended to match the maps we received, but the ballot lookup tool had not been updated to correctly reflect the precinct boundaries. We notified relevant county officials of these discrepancies and in most cases received confirmation on the discrepancy and that corrections had been made. Note: Despite the quantity of precincts that have been edited in some counties, it should be noted that as a percentage of a county’s total precincts the number of edited precincts is quite small (ex. Montgomery County has 381 precincts). These edits are primarily swapping sections of one side of a street from one precinct to another and are generally not large enough to affect the precinct assignment of census blocks if this file were disaggregated. As a result, these edits end up affecting a very small percentage of the total voters in a county. Nonetheless, these corrections help the file better represent how ballots were delivered for this election and have been useful for counties to make corrections to their systems for future elections. - Ashland: Online file used as a starting point. Edits to Ashland City 2-C, Ashland City 2-B, Montgomery 1, Ashland City 4-A, Loudonville 1, Milton 1, Milton 3, and Orange 2 verified by polling locator tool. Ultimately, the precinct boundary and election result files are split across four different files. The "_all_" file contains all the election results joined to precinct boundaries, but does not account for the various precinct-district splits identified in processing and as such, does not contain district assignments. The "_cong_", "_sldl_", and "_sldu_" files contain Congressional, State House and State Senate results at the most granular units for which data is available. Please note that in order to minimize superfluous splits, precinct splits are only made when a precinct contains votes for candidates in multiple districts, as such district assignments for precincts many not perfectly correspond to the districts themselves, particularly in large, uninhabited areas. In the Warren-:-MASON CITY Z (AHB) precinct, votes for State House District 55 candidates are present, despite the fact that this precinct does not geographically intersect that district. We confirmed that no processing errors were made in the election results and rechecked precinct boundary data (Mason City Z data was obtained directly from the county, and matched the received map and the voter file). When constructing the "_sldl_" file, these 87 votes (27 for GSL55DDAV and 60 for GSL55RTES) are removed from the file. Similarly, 2 total votes, 1 for each SLDL 71 candidate, are removed from Greene-:-SPG VLY TWP 436 (AIA). The county's records also list that no voters in that precinct are registered to vote in that precinct, so these votes are likely errant. Neither of these votes are not removed from the "_all_" file. Lastly, the maup smart_repair function was run in order to clean the small overlaps and geographical gaps that occur from combining shapefiles from a number of different sources. ## Additional Notes Following processing, votes matched the election results file, which itself was checked against a separate countywide election result file also available from the Ohio Secretary of State. Results matched exactly in all counties. As noted in the state's precinct-level election results file "Precinct-level data is not available for write-in candidates. To view results for write-in candidates, download the Summary-level spreadsheet." As such, votes for these candidates are not included in this file.
