American Alone or In Combination ## Processing Steps *Voter File* L2 assigns each voter to a county fips code based on the county name as reported on each state's voter file. The RDH aggregated the individual level voter file to the county level using the 5 digit county fips code (2-digit state + 3 digit county) for the fields listed above using SQL and Python. *CVAP* CVAP data was retrieved with a Python script from the Census. The data is available nationally for the County. To extract data from the national data was grouped by state and then extracted to a new file for each state. The data was pivoted from narrow to wide data based on GEOIDs so that one row is one County, and each field represents either an estimate or margin of error for a particular racial/ethnic category. The fields were renamed to fit character length requirements. The CSV was zipped into a folder with supporting files, ACS documentation, and this README. Processing was primarily completed using the pandas library. To improve the usefulness of the data, we have add three categories to correspond with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) racial categories. The "Alone or In Combinations" categories for American Indian or Alaska Native (fields with "NATIVEAM"), Asian (fields with "ASIAN"), and Black or African American (fields with "BLACK") represent an encompassing racial category that is inclusive of all categories that include that race. For example, CVAP_NATIVEAM_COMB22 would be the sum of the "Alone" CVAP_NATIVAM22, CVAP_NATIVEAM_BLACK22, and CVAP_NATIVEAM_WHITE22. For CVAP_BLACK_COMB22, the field would be the sum of the "Alone" CVAP_BLACK22, CVAP_NATIVEAM_BLACK22, and CVAP_BLACK_WHITE22. For CVAP_ASIAN_COMB22, the field would be the sum of the "Alone" CVAP_ASIAN22 and CVAP_ASIAN_WHITE22. These fields are also noted in the description as being "Alone or In Combination". No other estimate categories were modified. For the estimates that were modified to fit OMB racial/ethnic categories, we also modified the Margins of Error as well. To create the new MOEs for the derived estimates, we summed the squared values of each MOE for the necessary fields, and then took the square root of the summed value. The fields that are represented with these modified MOEs correspond to the modified racial categories described above. They are rounded to the nearest hundredth. Breakdowns for Hispanic/Non-Hispanic by race are not provided in the CVAP special tabulation. ## Additional Notes *Voter File* The fields above from *2022* are from the L2 Voter File pulled by the RDH on 4/3/2023. L2 retrieved this voter file data from the state on 1/19/2023. The fields above from *2023* are from the L2 Voter File pulled by the RDH on 8/23/2024. L2 retrieved this voter file data from the state on 5/13/2024. To see more detailed field descriptions, please view the attached data dictionary provided by L2. All fields are for individuals who are registered on the L2 Voter File as of the date of retrieval. The RDH did not have access to legacy or snapshot voter files. The voter file fields correspond to those voters registered to vote at their residence as of the date mentioned above. The vote history fields are tied to individual voters, then aggregated up - not tied to blocks as a whole, and as such represent whether or not voters in the block as of the L2 voter file date above voted *anywhere*, not necessarily specifically in that block. As such, this information can be used to approximate how the demographic in the block voted historically, but cannot be used to track how individuals in that block voted at the time of previous elections.
