2020 MI State House Incumbent Address(es) ## RDH Date Retrieval 04/07/2021 ## RDH Upload Date 04/10/2021 ## Sources The RDH received all incumbent address data from Dr. Carl E. Klarner (klarnerpolitics.org/bio-1). ## Fields **Fields:** **Descriptions:** state Name of state sfips Census state fips code ddez State legislative district designation dname Alpha component of state legislative district designation dno State legislative district number last Last name of state legislator, no hyphens or spaces first First name of state legislator middle Middle name of state legislator middle2 Second middle name of state legislator nick Nickname of state legislator suffix Suffix of state legislator last1 Last name components of state legislator when legislator has or may have a compound last name last2 Last name components of state legislator when legislator has or may have a compound last name last3 Last name components of state legislator when legislator has or may have a compound last name ltype1 Last name component type of state legislator in last1 ltype2 Last name component type of state legislator in last2 ltype3 Last name component type of state legislator in last3 party Political party of state legislator - Possible values: d: Democrat, i: Independent, np: non-partisan, r: Republican gender Possible values f: female, m: male, t: transgender (not observed) race Race of state legislator+ raceeth Usually not coded (Null), sometimes gives more detailed statement of a legislator's heritage (i.e., "Persian" instead of "MENA" etc.). mobleg Month of birth of state legislator dobleg Day of birth of state legislator yobleg Year of birth of state legislator ageleg Age of legislator xnameleg Additional/extra name component of state legislator res_line1 First line of state legislator's residence address res_extrli Extra line below first of state legislator's residence address res_city City/town of state legislator's residence address res_state State of state legislator's residence address res_zip Zip code of state legislator's residence address res_zippl4 Last 4 of extended zip code for state legislator's residence address res_ad_lat State legislator's residence address latitude res_ad_lon State legislator's residence address longitude geometry GIS point geometry of state legislator's residence address ## Processing Steps The original dataset from Dr. Klarner contained all states in one file. The RDH processed all of the state legislator residence latitudes and longitudes in QGIS to create point geometries and exported the data as one shapefile. The shapefile was then processed in Python using the Pandas and Geopandas packages. Shapefile fields are limited to 10 characters, so the RDH renamed all fields, that exceeded 10 characters to prepare for shapefile processing. In addition, Dr. Klarner's original dataset contained documentation fields explaining each row. The RDH removed documentation fields from the csv for simplicity, to reduce the number of fields. Relevant documentation is provided below in "Additional Notes". For more information, please reach out to the RDH help desk (info@redistrictingdatahub.org). Of the 7357 state legislators nationwide (note 26 vacant seats), there were 24 legislators for whom an address was provided without latitude and longitude data. The RDH geocoded the remaining addresses using the MapLarge geocoding tool available at (https://maplarge.com/geocoder). After processing all of the data in Python, each state was exported as a separate shapefile using Geopandas. ## Additional Notes +Race codes below: NOTE: Multiple codes can be given for one person. Every Cuban also coded "h" so the code "c" always appears as "ch" a: Asian, east-asian specifically, also Pacific Islands (not including Hawaiians) b: African-American/black c: Cuban (rarely coded) h: Hispanic/latino (includes Cuban) m: middle-eastern/North African n: Native-American/Hawaiian s: South-Asian: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, not Burma u: Race missing (one case in entire US) w: white/non-minority **Missing data** Nationwide, there were 7 addresses - 1 in AZ, ID, NE, NV, NJ, and 2 in NH - for which the dataset lists an address, but the latitude and longitude are not available. The lack of availability results when an address is a PO box, or if the address simply cannot be located. Nationwide, there are 128 legislators across 38 states for whom a name is provided, but no address information. This rare occurrence is due to Dr. Klarner either not being able to locate the legislator's address, or not being able to confirm with confidence that the address should be assigned to that legislator. Number of missing addresses by state as follows: Florida 18 Utah 6 Texas 6 West Virginia 5 Illinois 5 Washington 5 California 4 South Dakota 4 Kansas 4 Minnesota 4 Maryland 4 Nevada 4 Colorado 4 Georgia 4 Montana 4 Oregon 3 Arizona 3 Massachusetts 3 North Dakota 3 Connecticut 3 Alabama 3 Pennsylvania 3 South Carolina 3 Missouri 2 Wyoming 2 Arkansas 2 Alaska 2 Indiana 2 Mississippi 2 Rhode Island 2 Kentucky 2 Maine 1 Virginia 1 Oklahoma 1 Wisconsin 1 Idaho 1 Hawaii 1 Michigan 1 **From Dr. Klarner's codebook:** Winners of state legislative general elections were pulled from the State Legislative Election Returns database, updated through the November 2020 elections. Klarner, Carl, 2018, "State Legislative Election Returns, 1967-2016", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/3WZFK9, Harvard Dataverse, V3 UNF:6:pV4h1CP/B8pHthjjQThTTw==[fileUNF] Legislators from any legislative chamber that had at least some of its seats filled by general elections held before the November 2020 elections were then compared to state legislative websites' current lists of state legislators to find "partial term" legislators. Such legislators have come to office via appointment or special election to fill vacancies. Twenty-six seats are currently vacant, and these don't appear in the database, making a total of 7,357 state legislators [RDH Note: These are divided by state and office in separate files on the RDH website].
